Psalm 68:5-6

A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.

God sets the lonely in families, he leads forth the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

I am Stepanie Nance. My family adopted two little boys with Down Syndrome from Ukraine in 2010. I hope to educate and to inspire you. I hope to make you laugh and to make you cry.

Come along for the ride. It's a wild one!

Wednesday night updates

I was waiting to post until I had some good news to report. I keep telling myself, maybe tomorrow. The tomorrows add up and soon I find that a week has gone by.

Theo is still in the hospital. Hundreds of miles away from home. This sucks. I really miss him. How can that be? He's not been my son for very long, but it just feels like someone is missing around here.

Every day when the kids come home from school they ask me if Theo is home yet. They miss him, too!

Zhen is doing great, for the most part. I just can't get used to the fact that he cannot/will not chew food! I gave him some little tiny pieces of watermelon tonight and I thought I might have to call the paramedics. It was ugly but I finally got him to cough it up.

He really enjoys playing by himself. We try not to force ourselves on him too much, but still encourage him to hang out with everyone else. He's really getting better and spending more time with us. He's very serious so I spend a lot of time trying to get him to laugh or even smile. I hope to see more of those very soon!

  1. Still praying Theo gets home soon! Glad to hear Zhen is doing well! That's very interesting about the food thing. Hope he overcomes that soon - for both of your sakes.

  3. We are in-region right now and met up with a missionary family here who adopted 2 Ukrainian kids almost 10 years ago. Both were 4 and their son didn't know how to chew either. I had dinner with them last night and I can tell you he is completely fine now...he had no trouble putting away a big plate of dinner! I'm sure there's still a long road of therapy and relearning, but he'll get there! We're praying for you guys.

  4. Oh no why wont the hospital let Theo home? Is he still really that sick or are they trying to fatten him up, waiting on blood test? He will be so confused, hate suggesting that but you’re his mum you would be thinking and feeling that already. Hugs. Aden is 4yrs 7mths and can not eat watermelon. Yes we were going to call 000 to. Or apple or peach and banana…my sister in-law’s little boy is 3yrs old doesn’t have Ds or any other diagnoses and cant swallow any lumps at all. It’s not cause she doesn’t give him lumps, it’s just him rare but true. He has sensory issues it’s a huge thing.
With Aden he can eat bread cut small it’s just fruits and some textures. We just back right off again and wait. Aden has no gag reflex and chocks. With the apple oh my it was a tiny bit, was stuck at the back of his tongue. When he poked out his tongue I could see it, then he would put his tongue back to regular position and couldn’t’ breath. Far out went on and on. Till I could grab it and get it out of his mouth. Never again not for a very long time. You have your work cut out. Thinking of you alll

  5. Praying for Theo to come home soon. He is a tough little guy. I know that it is hard on you. Sounds like he is in caring hands. Is he in a major city? There might be a special needs organization that would come and visit him. I know that here in Atlanta there is a group called FOCUS and they visit medically fragile and kids with special needs in the hospital (we have been visited many times). It might be worth trying to locate such a group that could visit with him.

  7. How cool is that story above (by Denise)?!

I live in the KC area as well... about 30 minutes from CMH. If I can do anything to help let me know. The Down syndrome group here is the Down syndrome guild of Kansas city if you're interested.

This is one of my first times to your blog. I love reading about your little guys and your family. Prayers for all of you. Hope Theo is home soon.
